I appreciate that there is a need for pluralism in teaching about economics, but as I see the situation, there already exists there being much material that already is pluralistic. If a would-be student is introduced to it all, the confusion that results will be even more than when he/she is shown the present-day syllabus or teaching program.

The description above of present-day teaching traditions is nothing like the actual situation because different schools of thought in different places treat the subject in very different ways, and for the recognition of the existence of a hetero-orthodox procedure one already need to be more pluralistic in one’s approach!

What is needed is a basic structure or framework on which to hang all of the various branches and subjects, so as to allow this student to decide what is important to him/her for serious examination and study. So far there has not been any attempt to create such a framework and a would-be pluralistic teach organization should firstly offer all the subjects in an organized manner.

Economics, in the pluralist tradition, is really restoring the field to a discipline that studies the economy. The field of economics in the era of neo-classical domination has become narrow and doctrinaire. An economist in this tradition is deemed only to be a member of the discipline if they adhere to a set of axiomatic propositions concerning human behavior and related notions about the operation and purpose of markets. Ideology has replaced thinking and generations of students have been taught putative laws on optimization, distribution and economic stability with an emphasis on statistical and mathematical manipulation aimed at both applying and verifying these laws. Pluralism is about re-opening the discipline to a plethora of different approaches which deepen our understanding of economies and how it can better serve humanity and ipso facto does not exclude any methodology or tradition.

Since “the proper study of Man is man” we find that the meaning of the word “proper” creates confusion. Does it apply only to the formal theoretical and logical presentations of economics or is it another way of saying that our pluralism proposals must cover an even broader range of subjects? So I am opposed to the use of this word in describing pluralism.
